Fakes, Copies, and Plagiarism
The principle of free imitation is the foundation of all evolution. However, for rights holders, this approach is comparable to a real disaster.
There is no product that cannot be reproduced with high accuracy. Counterfeit manufacturers have advanced so far that radio frequency tags, watermarks, secret technologies, expensive equipment, materials, and components no longer guarantee protection from fakes. A local and artisanal phenomenon, initially characteristic of Asia, has grown into global fraud, accounting for 2.5% of world trade (2019 data, EUIPO report, 2021).
Everything is counterfeited: raw materials, furniture, fittings, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, perfumes, electronics, parts, documents, currency, food, alcohol, cigarettes, ceramics, art, antiques, jewelry, toys, textiles, clothing, and premium items.
* I'll clarify. I will return to this topic on a regular basis. There are both drawbacks and undeniable benefits. Think for yourself.
Classification of Main Types of Counterfeit Products
There is still no convenient and understandable systematization. I offer you my vision. Depending on the execution, types of fakes are grouped into five categories. In all these cases, either full borrowing of certain properties and characteristics or partial borrowing occurs.
There is a sixth group. It stands separately, endowing the object with fictitious and imaginary features. Here, only psychology works.
Plagiarism (PL)
Smuggling
Parallel Import (PI)
Third Shifts (TS)
Counterfeits
Exact Reproduction (SQ)
High Quality (Q)
Fakes
Small-scale Production (SSP)
Medium-quality Copies (MQ)
Low-quality Copies (LQ)
Handicraft Imitations (HC)
Imitation (IM)
Forgery (F)
Are Fakes Dangerous? Do They Have Any Benefits?
In my opinion, this phenomenon is an integral part of modern culture. Look at it from another angle: the international shadow turnover in the fashion world increases brand recognition, promotes sales, and makes a significant contribution to creating a competitive climate. Besides, non-original items target a different audience. People whose monthly salary is much lower than the price of a simple T-shirt from Dior or Gucci will likely go to the nearest shopping mall for a knock-off from Zara or Topshop (IM) or look for faceless replicas (SSP, MQ, LQ).
They are quite satisfied with this arrangement. This is because the desire to possess is deeply embedded in the human subconscious. It, like litmus paper, demonstrates social status. "Conspicuous" purchases are typical for most of us. Only some can afford the original, while others cannot.
Copies in the fashion industry also stimulate the development of the regional market. They do not harm health and do not pose a life threat, unlike low-quality medicines, parts, food products, alcoholic beverages, and tobacco products.
Yes, things are sadder in other sectors of the economy. The secret nature and fertile ground have only contributed to the growth of transnational criminal activities. This is a serious problem that can affect everyone. Of course, it needs to be fought.
What to Do?
The first thing that comes to mind is to restructure society and improve the standard of living. But, let's be honest, this idea is quite utopian. Therefore, one of the effective measures is to influence the consciousness of potential buyers. I am talking about informational warfare.
Marketplaces, online stores, and unscrupulous sellers have turned into perfect channels for distributing counterfeit products. Large sums are made on the lack of consumer experience in authentication, and the main players, intentionally or not, are specialists, managers, and company employees.
Consultants are not allowed to share their opinion on the authenticity of third-party purchases. Resale platforms and auctions turn a blind eye because they are more interested in profit than anyone else. Reviews from random bloggers are often inaccurate. Obtaining reliable information about the origin of a listed lot and distinguishing truth from falsehood is not easy.
The only solution is to teach you to better understand quality. Everyone should understand what they are paying for. At the same time, it is necessary to gradually achieve restrictive legislation and transparency policies by implementing open traceability in all countries.
We'll start with a simple one. What can really be done here and now. I am confident that useful knowledge will protect you from mistakes in the pursuit of brands, profits, or illusory status. I have been deceived too, and I know how unpleasant it is.
